The Toyota Tundra is a legendary work truck, and its 2022 redesign makes it even more of a powerhouse. The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra has a fully boxed frame that’s 10% lighter, but 20% more rigid, than its predecessor, which when paired with one of the 2022 Tundra’s 6 suspension systems, makes for a hard-working and easy-riding pickup truck that you’ll be glad you bought.

What’s the big deal with all those suspensions, though? In this blog post, the experts at Sunrise Toyota Oakdale will walk you through each, so you’ll be well-prepared when you walk into our dealership to purchase your brand-new Tundra.

The 2022 Tundra’s Base Suspension with Rear Air Springs

All Toyotas get steel front coil springs and share an identical solid rear anti-roll bar. Base Tundra models have single-rate front and rear coil springs and Tokico-brand twin-tube shock absorbers, which are tailored to suit the equipment level and mass of the truck.

If you want an upgrade with a Tundra SR5 or Tundra Limited, you can opt for Toyota’s Load-leveling Rear Height Control Air Suspension package, which adds load leveling and an option to manually lower the truck’s rear when loading or attaching a trailer, or raise it to clear an obstacle or improve the departure angle.

Toyota Tundra TRD Sport Suspension

The TRD Sport package, only available on Tundra SR5 models, lowers the truck by a half-inch with single-rate coil springs. This package also replaces the base model’s shocks with Bilstein monotubes tuned to optimize control when maneuvering on pavement. So if you’re planning to go off-road a lot in your Toyota Tunda, try another suspension package.

2022 Toyota TRD Off-Road Suspension

For aggressive trail running optimization, you can purchase the TRD Off-Road package, available on Tundra SR5, Tundra Limited, and Tundra 1794 Edition models. This package features the same Bilstein monotube shocks as the TRD Sport package, but tuned to keep the body level high when off-road running.

To keep from bottoming out, the front coil springs are also upgraded in the TRD Off-Road, to a dual-rate design that stiffens up by 30% in the last 30% of travel. The package also comes with Multi-Terrain Select when paired with 4WD, which includes Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control. Of course, you’ll also get the distinctive TRD Off-Road badging, skidplates, mud guards, and shift knob to show off your new Tundra.

Adaptive Variable Suspension on a Tundra Platinum or Tundra 1794 Edition

If you want the creamiest on-road ride you can get in a Toyota Tundra, the Advance package with a Tundra Platinum or Tundra 1794 Edition. The Advance package includes the load-leveling rear air suspension mentioned above, plus adaptive dampers developed by Hitachi and Aisin with solenoid-controlled valves that vary the damping as fast as every 20 milliseconds, perfectly tuning your ride no matter where you go. Plus, the Advance package features a 10-inch color head-up display so you can drive unencumbered.

Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Suspension

The absolute best shocks you can buy for the Toyota Tundra come installed with the off-road optimized Tundra TRD Pro, which has red-painted dual-rate front coil-over springs that look great and raise the front of the Tundra by 1.1 inches, providing even more travel. The shocks themselves get a huge upgrade, to Fox internal-bypass remote-reservoir shocks with 2.5-inch-diameter monotube bodies that stay cool even when storming the desert. Plus, the front anti-roll bar is 20% stiffer than the standard bar, and painted red, to boot.

To cap the TRD Pro’s suspension off are Falken Wildpeak 33-inch all-terrain tires, wrapped around 8-by-18-inch black BBS wheels. These juicy tires add nearly a foot to the TRD Pro’s turning diameter, and the wider body doesn’t quite need clearance lights, but Toyota’s thrown them in anyway.
